Salento is the starting point for excursions into the Valley of Cocora : jeep taxis leave from the town square and travel 11 km up the valley to the settlement of "Cocora", from which point the valley may be explored on foot or on horseback via numerous trails.
Cocora is the location of the majority of wax palms (Ceroxylon quindiuense) in existence in the world.

It was created in 1977 in the departments of Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda and Tolima.
Salento has a good portion of this sanctuary with places like Paramillo del Quindío, los Arenales del Quindío, la Cuchilla y la Laguna Berlín, la Laguna Alta, el Cerro Águila y la Cuchilla de la Media Luna.
Close to the border with the department of Tolima is the Nevado de Tolima with an elevation of 5216 meters.

These houses are representative of the social organization of the city in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
The constructions, some still in traditional bahareque or tapia style are well preserved, painted in bright colors, and have large doors with rich carvings and large balconies overlooking the street.
